Skipjack Review invites submissions of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, interviews, graphic narratives, translations, visual art, and hybrid works of whimsy year-round. Submissions must be previously unpublished material. We encourage simultaneous submissions but ask that you kindly withdraw your work if it's accepted elsewhere. We publish three issues annually: two online editions, which are free, and one print anthology. We pay a $5 honorarium for all work selected for publication and $25 for cover art. Additionally, our $100 Dead Herring Prize is awarded to one published work each year.
Workshopped manuscripts receive detailed feedback, developmental recommendations, and a thorough line edit from at least one Skipjack editor.
Send us that boomerang you don't want to give up on that keeps coming back with personal rejections attached. Or maybe you've got a puzzle with a missing piece and you just need another set of eyes to help you find it? Whatever the case, one thing writers often get wrong is sending out a piece too soon, a manuscript better suited for workshop. But some months there's no time for our writing groups; and a friend who'd read and give notes on a three-hundred page novel is a friend indeed. And let's be honest, who can afford to pay what most editors charge for feedback? That's the worst part: the state of the industry today sees many authors paying more money for edits, production costs, and/or marketing expenses than these projects end up netting.
Here at Skipjack, our mission is to foster emerging talent and art without charging an arm and a leg. We provide professional-quality editing services without the market-standard markup. We are reviewing everything from poetry packets to novels. Please be sure to indicate the proper category and corresponding fee before submitting this form.
All manuscripts should be double-spaced and formatted in twelve-point font with one-inch margins unless your project necessitates deviating from this standard formatting. Please include a detailed description of thoughts and concerns extending beyond the page, including anything you'd like us to focus on and any questions you'd like answered.
Call for Submissions: Music
The hills and hollers are alive with the sound of music!
Whether it’s sweetness to your ears or the sounding of an alarm, Skipjack Review wants to see your most musical writing and art. For this special anthology, we’re looking and listening for shortform fiction, essays, CNF, and art about music and its relationship to our environment.
Have you ever walked down an old dirt road and heard singing in the distance? Or maybe you played in a marching band and wished for live earth instead of AstroTurf? Can certain frequencies really unlock higher chakras? And what is it about acoustic guitars and campfires that makes everything right in the world?
Send us your truths, your jazz, and your tales of musical milestones. Send us your tales of whoa—you know, “Wish I Hadn’t Heard That but I Heard That”–Whoa! We’re talking resonances you feel in your bones. If it sounds too good to be true, we want to read about it.
Submit fiction or CNF up to 5,000 words.
Include up to five poems in a single document.
Send us your visual art, hallucinations, magic, and geo-art. We publish thrice anually, including two free, digital issues, and one print anthology. Our pockets are still pretty shallow, but we pay a $5 honorarium for general art and $25 for a suite of 3 or more pieces.
Submit to this category to receive a one-week response and short but sweet feedback.
(Note: For detailed feedback and line editing services, consider submitting to our Manuscript Feedback option.)
